What is SMUN?

Model UN is a simulation of the United Nations which engage 500,000 students from all over the world every year. Students acting as Delegates debate issues that are currently being discussed by real diplomats. This debate takes place at conferences that include delegates from different groups or clubs. Each delegate is given a country to represent and will debate on their behalf.

Students step into the shoes of ambassadors of countries that are members of the UN, from Albania to Zimbabwe. The students debate current issues like global climate change or immigration and so forth. Moreover, they prepare draft resolutions, plot strategies, negotiate with supporters and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate the UN's rules of procedure - all in the interest of resolving problems that affect the world.

The SMUN 2023 will be the second MUN conference at Soran University after the completion of NMUNA in March 2022. It will involve about 100 students from different ethnic and religious groups across Iraq and Kurdistan Region.
